Chapter Fifteen

“You don’t know how happy I am that you came to my rescue,” Becky said as she took hold of Adam’s hand. “If I’d spent another night under my daddy’s roof, I’d have just about blown a gasket.”

“Well, I’m glad I could oblige,” Adam said as they strolled down one of the main drags in the city. Saturday night in downtown Savannah was jumping and jiving. Flappers and Shebas hung off the arms of their butter-and-egg men with short, wide ties and two-toned shoes as they slipped from one dive that had peanut shells on the floor to another that was a clip joint. Keeping track of them all was like trying to see the beautiful carved animals on a carousel before they spun past.

Becky and Adam had hit three speakeasies, danced five dances, drunk half a dozen champagne cocktails between the two of them, said hello to at least twenty people Becky knew by name, and finally had a chance just to shoot the breeze and cool off with a stroll down the avenue.

“I still can’t believe what that Officer Elby Ferris was saying to me,” Becky rambled. “He was certainly trying to sell me something, but I wasn’t buying. He knew that too. I don’t think he cared.”

“I can’t believe you went without telling me or anyone else where you were headed. Do you know how dangerous that was?” Adam said, slipping his arm around Becky’s waist. “Not all the coppers in this town are on the up-and-up.”

“Oh, it was broad daylight. I wasn’t afraid,” Becky huffed.

“Of course you weren’t. That’s your problem. You’ve seen things that would scare normal people, so you are immune to actual scary situations. Like meeting a stranger for lunch,” Adam said, holding his chin high. “You need someone around to tell you when to be calm and when to be afraid.”

“You think you’re so smart.” Becky snuggled closer to him. She walked with her head against his shoulder for a couple of paces then spoke again. “Adam, I have to tell you something important.”

“This sounds serious,” he replied.

“I feel I have to tell you that I can’t cook.” Becky spat the words out quickly.

“You can’t cook? Um… neither can I?” Adam replied, looking down at her curiously.

“I can’t cook. I’m okay at keeping things tidy, but I am wary of going into places with cobwebs or dust bunnies. I don’t think I’ve looked under my bed in years.” She smiled. “I don’t think I’ve ever ironed a single piece of clothing. Golly, I sound rather useless.” Becky frowned.

“Useless? You?” Adam removed his arm from around her waist and offered her his elbow. She slipped her hand through and squeezed his strong biceps.

“Rebecca Madeline Mackenzie, who makes sure everyone has a full glass at every party? Who makes sure every lonely heart gets at least one turn on the dance floor? And might I just inquire who treats everyone, whether they are a lowly doorman or hatcheck girl or proprietor of the
